I think I mentioned this once on here but I didn't really go into how upset I was about it. Some people knew about this but I didn't like talking about it because it was just embarrassing and made me sad and I felt like a bad mom. Up until today, Max never said Mommy. I'm not just saying that or exaggerating. He did not refer to me as Mommy or even admit that I was his mother. As a speech therapist, I have never met a child who didn't say Mommy unless they were completely non-verbal. Anyone who can say anything says Mama or Ma or Mom or Mommy or something to call their mother. I mean he said "mama" when he was 6 months old and sometimes even now, he'll run around saying mamamamama but it didn't really have any meaning. He would never point to me and say it or say it from another room or anything like that.
The only explanation I could come up with was that he was mad at me for being pregnant and having a baby. He definitely started spending more time with Mark toward the end of my pregnancy just because I couldn't do as much as I could before. But he wasn't really talking much at that point so I just figured he wasn't calling anyone anything. Then after Mallory was born he started saying more and more words including Daddy and always wanting daddy. I figured this was normal under the circumstances The thing is, I knew he was capable of saying Mommy. It was almost like he was just refusing to say it. We would go around the room and say who's that who's that and he would say "daddy, gigi, Maxie, baby, pop pop" (he just starting saying that one last week). Then we would get to me and he would say "eh". The past month or so, it really started bothering me. I guess its kind of normal to want daddy alot since I have to spend alot of time with the baby. But for a 2 year old to not ever say Mommy? Come on, thats just not fair. So I started doing everything to try to get him to say it, playing tricks on him to see if I could catch him off guard but it never worked.
Today out of the blue I was just saying "mommaaayyy" in a funny way, and he was laughing. All of a sudden he said it and I was like wait did you really say that or are you just imitating me? So I was like who am I? And he said it again. I asked him who I was 100 more times today and he said it every time. And all of a sudden he was coming up behind me, hugging me and saying "mommy". Music to my ears! Now do you think it is a coincidence that this is his first day home with me and he is done with daycare and he just randomly started saying mommy today or do you think my child is a genius and at 2 years old, knew how to get back as his mother for having another baby and putting him in daycare while I was home with the baby all day? I'm pretty sure he is brilliant.
