So on the morning before that appointment we noticed Max was limping. Not just a little, a lot, not putting any weight on his left side. I sent him to school hoping it was nothing. When I picked him up his teacher said he was really limping all day so I called the doctor and back to the office we went. We saw a nurse who said he really was favoring that side and she recommended an x-ray because it seemed like it was his knee (there was a bruise there) and knees are pretty serious if there is an injury. That's when I lost my cool because we all know what x-rays mean with Max. We don't usually come out of them with a clean bill of health. This was probably when I lost that sheet of paper with Mallory's height and weight on it. I called Mark and my mom saying that someone needed to come meet me because I couldn't take both kids to get an x-ray by myself. As it was, they were already both screaming in the doctor's office and I was "that mom" as usual. Mark ended up meeting me. Long story short, we got the x-ray, went home, had to wait for an hour for the nurse to call us with the results while I paced back and forth, googling broken knee caps and picturing Max in a wheel chair. Turns out the x-ray didn't show anything thank god. So the nurse suggested we wait a few days, give him some tylenol and hope it improves because if it didn't we'd have to go for more tests. Thankfully, he is not limping anymore!
Look at his school picture that I just got today.

Compared to last year

I went to the ASHA conference in Philly this weekend. ASHA is the national SLP convention that is in a different place every year. It just so happened to be in a convenient place this year. We got there early Saturday morning, went to classes and learned alot all day. Then ended the day with shopping, then drinks and dinner with Alissa. It was a great time and the overall themes that our conversations kept returning to were...how are we 31? How are we moms of 2 kids? How have we known eachother since we were 18? And most of all when did we become experienced SLPs who know what we are doing? Somewhere between being nervous graduate students who had no idea how we would survive to now we have become real professionals and even though we still feel like we are 22 years old and don't know what we are doing-we do! It was so nice to sit with 100s of other people just like us and hear that we are doing what we should be doing and also to learn new ways we can help the people we work with. We both feel so lucky to be in the profession that we are in. I know I say it all the time, but I'm just surprised that it is something that was actually a decision I made on my own. I'm not the most decisive person, and I think its weird that I made the decision to be an SLP when I was 18 years old and I'm still doing it and loving it. I'm lucky.
I miss living in Philly. It is such a fun city and the food-really nothing compares. The weekend couldn't end perfectly, there had to be a glitch and we were even saying it the whole time-something will happen to make it not a completely perfect weekend. It's funny because Dayna was talking about Parker getting the stomach flu and how she was so scared he was going to. I was making fun of her, saying big deal? If he gets it, he gets it, he'll be fine. Sure enough, I called Mark Sunday morning and he tells me Mallory threw up. Then calls me again an hour later to say she threw up again. Co-incidence or pay back for making fun of my friend? She threw up a few more times throughout the morning and then has been fine for over 24 hours now so hopefully it was just a little bug that is over. And hopefully none of us will get sick! One good thing is that it was the perfect reason for me to get my carpets cleaned and they are being steamed tomorrow!
Here's to a calm and healthy Thanksgiving week!!
