Report Card

Max's last day of school was yesterday. They give a little "skills concepts" checklist for 2-3 year olds. We had a conference to go over how he was doing in December and they gave the same checklist then. They gives letters: N for skill is not apparent, D for skill is developing, and C for skill is consistently demonstrated. So I guess all C's would be perfect (which actually isn't a great system in my opinion because when a parent looks at a report card and sees all C's it just doesn't look good. Anyway in December he had alot of C's and some D's and even back then I was thinking...he really is consistently demonstrating more of these skills than they are giving him credit for but whatever, I'm not going to make a big deal about it.

So this time, He improved to a "C" in a few things that he had "d"s in last time...verbalizing wants, points to objects when asked, identifies colors, learning to put on and remove a coat, drinks from a cup, helps to put things away. He still had "D"s in Describing what happens in 2-3 words, points to big and little, identifies simple shapes and puts on a coat. Um....ok....Max speaks in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 word sentences. He knows big and little and all the shapes (I tested this last night). I agree with the coat thing, he doesn't put it on by himself. I mean I guess they are saying his sentences are "still developing" but come on, that is just hard for me to step back and let someone say something about my child's language without defending him. Where was the end of the year parent/teacher conference? Every time I talk to them they tell me hes talking so much and doing great. But hes not describing what happens in 2-3 words? Maybe when they ask him what happened in school he just doesn't respond as efficiently as he does when I ask him or maybe hes just shy at school. I know this is payback for every time I write on a progress report that a kid still can't do this this and this and the parent is like "he can do that at home" and I don't believe them.

Remember a few posts ago I was saying I don't care if Max fails the 4th grade? Obviously I do and will care! I think its just the language thing that gets me. Its going to be hard as my kids grow up to listen to people with untrained ears tell me things about my kids that I know more about. Anyway, out of 32 skills, he is consistently demonstrating 28 of them, and still "developing" in 4 of them (in their eyes). Which means he consistently demonstrates 87% of the skills, which is a B+. I guess I can't complain about that. I'll take a B student.
