2 and a half

I am so preoccupied with everything that I didn't even realize today is Max's half birthday until Liz mentioned something on my facebook page. I'm the worst mom ever! I didn't do a half birthday celebration for him (did I do one last year?) so I thought I at least owed him a nice blog entry. First of all I have been thinking about how when I'm going through a difficult time with him or really just going through anything with him, I always think of him as so much older than he is. And then when I look back at a particular time and think about what I was upset about and worried about and stressed about back then in regards to Max, I think...what was I thinking, he was a baby!! I don't know if I'm explaining it correctly. Like even the little things...when he wasn't crawling at 8 months and I was all worried. Then a few months later I was like why was I worried, he was just a little baby. Then when he started acting out at 15 months and I would get so upset and think he was being so bad and we had the worst day, etc. Now when I look back, 15 months is a baby, what was I making a big deal about? So, the same holds true today, I have days where I'm talking about him like he knows how his actions affect people and like he does things on purpose and thinks about things as an adult would when in the grand scheme of things, he really is still a baby, he's only been around for 2.5 years. Obviously he has grown up alot since he was born but I'm trying to remind myself that he is so young and is going to continue to change so much each month and each year and we have a long way to go before he is really who he is going to be. So anyway, at 2.5 years old Max:

-wears a size 4T shirt and 3T pants (I have no idea how tall he is or how much he weighs)
-doesn't eat real meals, mostly just snack foods and rarely even sits down to eat
-loves all sports balls, holding them and throwing them and kicking them
-still likes phones and plugs but is slightly less obsessed with carrying them around
-loves to shake, hit, lay on and throw things at Mallory
-gets "time out" about 10 times a day on average and comes right back out and does the same thing
-is not into potty training at all but is very into taking all of his clothes off and his diaper
-talks in full sentences and says the funniest things
-has several books completely memorized, his favorites are the scanimation books "swing", "waddle" and "gallop"
-sings songs he learned in school like David Melach
-finally goes to bed in his room by himself but we usually have to sit in the hall way until he is sleeping (this is an improvement from what we were doing a month ago)
-usually sleeps past 6 but we've realized that he sleeps no more than 10 hours. So if he goes to sleep at 8, he'll be up at 6 on the dot. If he goes to bed earlier than 8, he'll be up before 6.
-will be going to a new pediatrician (long story short, our pediatrician who has a very good reputation in the area just wasn't doing it for us so after being slightly unhappy there for over a year, we're switching).
-has surprisingly good articulation. He's probably difficult to understand to an "unfamiliar listener" but alot of things he used to say wrong, he says right now which is just amazing for me to see because all the kids I work with don't get it on their own. One thing that I'm kind of impressed with is his /l/ blends. He used to say back for black and bu for blue (which is very common and normal) and now hes all of a sudden saying "black" and lots of other harder sounds. So proud :) He does still have some really funny errors. He calls a brownie a "toonie". haha
-asks for milk in bed every night
-loves cookies and brownies (who doesn't?). When I am asking him what he wants for dinner and I say "How about fish sticks" he says "how about cookies"
-has to be held down in order to get his teeth brushed well
-usually takes a 1-2 hour nap around 1 but has recently been not always taking it. When he used to fall asleep in the car it was a sure thing that I'd be able to transfer him to his bed and he'd stay asleep. Not so much anymore. Today he woke up after only a 10 minute nap in the car when I brought him upstairs and stayed awake. Not fun but it does make for an easier bedtime.
-talks about his friends at school and is starting to interact more and more
-is much better behaved at school than he is at home
-Likes Sesame Street and Barney and Thomas but doesn't really zone out in front of the TV as much anymore. I guess thats a good thing but it means no breaks for us!

I know that sounds like alot of negative stuff to say but I think alot of it just comes with this age. There are days when I think I am going to lose my mind but somehow I never stay mad at him. Does that mean I'm a real mom? He really is so cute and sweet and it makes me sad that sometimes all these behaviors get in the way of seeing who he really is. Hopefully over the next few years the behaviors will just get better and better and he'll just be a good boy all the time. Happy half birthday Max!

Here he is reading Gallop. Usually he does the whole thing by himself but he wouldn't do it for the camera. You get the idea:
