I know this will be very insignificant in months or years from now but right now, it seems pretty significant because its all I can think about or talk about. I could have told you a few weeks after Max was born that he would probably be difficult to potty train and now here we are at almost 3 and a half and we're still working at it. As I have probably mentioned before, alot of my friends who have daughters just woke up one morning and their girls were magically potty trained. Ok fine, maybe they had to give them an m&m a few times and then they were potty trained. Maybe that will happen with Mallory. I love when I talk to people and they're like oh we just offered candy every time he went and that worked, we just gave him a present every time and that worked, we just told him he could be a big boy like daddy and that worked, we just told him there were no more diapers at the store and that worked, we just bought a baby doll that peed in the potty and potty trained the baby doll and that worked. Well nope, nope, nope, nope, and nope..not our little guy! He could CARE LESS about the prizes, encouragement, praise, etc etc. I swear he would wear a diaper on his wedding day and not be phased.
We basically spent all of winter break working on it and I guess it all half way worked. He was at the point where I started taking him out of the house for a half hour to an hour and he was fine and not having accidents or anything. That was a big step. He was doing great and then we noticed he was gradually using the potty less and less and learning how to hold it for longer periods of time. Then one day (actually new years eve) I literally did not see him go all day. He must have gone in his diaper when he woke up, held it until I gave him a bath or something, and then held it the rest of the day until he had a pull up on to go to bed. The child has an iron bladder apparently. So he kept pulling stuff like that and actually worked out a strategies where he only had to actually use a potty 1 time a day. Pretty smart if you ask me. He would just wait until nap time or until some other time when he was either wearing a pull up or not wearing clothes.
that was after not going ALL day. He doesn't even look uncomfortable!
So the big test was going to be if he would stay dry at school. I took him Monday morning, explained everything to the teachers and left hoping for the best. I was sure when I picked him up at 1 that he would be wearing a different outfit. When I walked in I saw him wearing the same outfit and the teacher said that even though he tried several times, he never went. He held it the whole morning until we got home!! The same exact thing happened on Tuesday.
I took Mallory to the doctor on Tuesday night. She has croup (oops forgot to mention her in this whole post). I mentioned to my doctor what was going on with Max and I was shocked when he said to just put him back in a pull up and forget about it for 2 months. He said he just doesn't sound ready and with a kid like Max, hes not going to do it if he doesn't want to. He said that holding it until you have a pull up on isn't really being "potty trained". I left feeling discouraged and like I had just spent 2 months and alot of money on potties and prizes and candy all for nothing.
That is his "blue blackberry" and is one of the 500 things I have tried to use to bribe him.
I decided to keep him in underwear for a few more days to see what happened. On Wednesday when I picked him up from school I was all ready to go in and hear that he held it the whole time again but instead that was the day that he was in a different outfit. His first accident :( So I figured the doctor was right, he wasn't ready.
Today I sent him in underwear again just to give it one last shot and low and behold, I got a text from my nanny after she picked him up today that said "Max used the toilet at school and stayed dry the whole day". I was at an IEP meeting ( the parents weren't there yet) and I was so excited I read the text out loud and everyone clapped. I am so proud and excited. I know it doesn't sound like a big deal but it if a big step for him! Of course he got home and had an accident later in the day but I think he was just over excited to be with grandma and grandpa this afternoon and forgot for a minute that he was wearing underwear (easy to just blame the in-laws :) !). I think it's a really big deal that he went at school so we'll take it!! Yay Max!
