What we've been up to and some Facebook defensiveness

It's been another week where I have been blogging in my head and now I forgot most of what I wanted to say. Max got a hair cut...

It's not as short as last time. This is one of his little routines that he does..."Mommy go on the puter and do some work" Then this is what he does while I pretend to not see.

Hand in a bag of chocolate chips. He's so obvious but I pretend to not catch on because its funny to see.

Mallory got new shoes...real ones, not just the target plastic Target kind. They are so cute and she loves walking in them!

Max has been as challenging as ever these last few weeks. 5:30 am is not only the norm now, it's kind of what we hope for. Rather than 5 or 5:15. He also didn't nap several times this week which just makes for a horrible afternoon/evening. Luckily, he is napping now. Its a good thing he's cute.

The Airy/Louise Mega-reunion was this weekend. It was not the turnout they were hoping for, and there were things were things that could have been done differently but in the end, we had a great time. We started the weekend with a pre-party on Saturday night at a bar with lots of camp people organized by Jason of course. It was fun to be out but turned out being a much later night than we are used to and Max was up at 5:15. Luckily my inlaws were here so they took over around 6:30 and I got back in bed until 9:30. We got up to camp around 2:00 on Sunday. The girls spent the day at Louise and the guys at Airy and then we all met for dinner and a presentation at Airy that evening. It was really fun to be at camp with friends and I even made something in Copper Enamel. I think I actually got to do copper enamel as an activity maybe twice in my 11 summers there!

For those of you that were there...it was so much fun seeing you! It made me miss camp and appreciate how much of my life I owe to that special place. I'm going back one day:)

So onto me being defensive...ok, I have always been an internet person. I emailed people even back in high school. A few years later I was always googling some disease I thought I had. In college and after I was very into IMing. When I was planning my wedding I got into chatboards like theknot and had my wedding webpage and all of that. Then when I was pregnant I was very into thenest. I learned how to post pictures and make websites and do everything you needed to know to be "active" online. When myspace became popular, I was into that. So needless to say, I've been into facebook for about 2 and a half years now. Plus I've had this blog for about that long too. So...I can admit, I am very into the internet. It's just part of who I am. I always say I am never bored in my adult life. I think I owe that to there always being something to look at or some information to find out or something to do on the computer. Surprisingly, I don't have an iphone, ipod, blackberry, or any other gadget that most of the world now has. It's just me on my laptop when I am at home.

I think facebook is great because you get a peak into people's lives who you otherwise wouldn't know anything about. 10 years ago, someone in their 30s would have probably lost touch with most people they went to high school with, everyone they went to camp with, most of their college friends and people from previous jobs or other places they have lived. I on the other hand am 31 and still "in touch" with all of those people. Maybe not truly in touch, but I know the major things going on in their life. I can say "congrats" or "remember that time..." or "it was great seeing into you today!" Its is also such a wealth of information. I can ask a completely random question at any time of day and someone will respond and know the answer. Not to mention that I have relatives all over the country who I used to see once every few years and now I "see" them and they are so much more a part of my every day life.

Now there are people who update their status every 5 seconds "I'm going to the store, I'm tired, I am leaving work in 5 minutes, I'm hungry, I'm eating steak and salad for dinner". I don't do that, no offense to other people who do...that is their thing. I update my status maybe every few days with a question or a random thought or just something I am excited about and want to share. I do upload pictures as soon as I can which is usually the same day the picture is taken or even within minutes or hours after it is taken. I just feel like...it takes 5 minutes to do (literally the computer is in my main room of my house, the usb cord is always right there and I could edit them and upload them to facebook in my sleep). The people who are in them want to see them and we are so lucky that there is a way to do that. What if we took a picture and had to wait until the roll was finished then get them developed and then mail it to people to show them!! A different world it would be! If I take a picture of my kids that I think is really cute, I'm excited to share it, I want to hear the comments, its fun and its what we do in this day and age. We need that immediate gratification I guess. My parents and aunts and uncles and other people who I don't see all the time are on facebook too. They love that they get to see my kids growing up when they would otherwise not ever get to see them so often. Its just the easiest way to share. If I were to take a picture of Mallory and not upload it for 3 weeks I would feel like it was ancient history. She would already look different and be doing different things and it's almost like the picture is irrelevant.

So I know I have this reputation and Mark hears from his friends about me and facebook alot. My response is that they wouldn't know what I was doing or how much I was on unless they are on too!! And I think it is much much worse to be someone who doesn't post anything and doesn't put pictures on but is just looking at other people (known as a "lurker" in chatboard terms). So at an event like this past weekend where pictures were being taken, of course I get comments like "oh is this already on facebook?" or "I'm shocked Kim's pictures were up the second she got home from the bar". I appreciate comments like "thanks for getting them up so quick" or "Kim should take it because she'll put it online". Those are nice things to say but then I get made fun of for it too. It's totally not one person at all. I mean I have said it about myself too. I just feel like it should be celebrated and not criticized. Everyone wants the pictures quickly and enjoys when they see them and I'm the one who actually takes the time and effort to do it!

That's all. Why do I see lots of sarcastic "thanks for getting them up so quick" comments in my future? :)

Well said! I'm forwarding this to Josh to read, cause he hears it from his friends about how I'm always on facebook (even though I feel like I barely upload pics anymore cause I barely take any). It's just a generational thing!

This is the most RIDICULOUS post you have ever written. Why on EARTH do you feel you need to defend yourself at all whatsoever? I update my status like 12 times a day. Who cares what anyone else thinks??????? Delete those people off your Facebook! I am so pissed at this post. You should not be caring what anyone else thinks at all let alone how much time you spend on Facebook. Everyone spends a lot of time on Facebook and those who feel the need to act as if they don't are usually the ones who spend the most time. It's called DEFLECTING!
