Summer Summary

The end of summer is here again. Some of trends this summer around our house include an obsession with Fresh Beat Band, lots of trips to serve your own yogurt places, ice pops, snowballs, crafts, Crocs, Call Me Maybe, good afternoon naps for all, new found interests in sunscreen, bug spray and goggles, jumping in, going under, and real swimming for both kids, lots of evenings at the pool, birthday parties (How did we ALL have babies in August?) trips to Walgreens where we go in for milk and come out with picture frames, stickers, random plugs, tic tacs, gum, gift cards (max's new gift of choice) and other toys we do not need, and crazy storms in Baltimore! The kids loved camp and I got through summer school unharmed (although it was a close call on a few days).

It was so quick and I'm actually excited for the beginning of the school year.  I know I'll regret saying that soon but really, I just feel like it will be an exciting time. At least for a while...starting a new job, having Max in a class right next door to my office. Yes, next door. We found out who his teacher and its literally the closest classroom possible to my speech room. His teacher is amazing though and he's with Jenna and a few other people we know. I think hes going to love it. Grandma and Grandpa got them both new backpacks for their birthdays and they love them! They've been practicing all week...

Mallory is going to be really upset when she realizes shes not getting on the bus and has 2 more years before kindergarten. Although noone would even question it if she walked on the bus and went into a kindergarten class.

Apparently his idea of what you do at school goes something like this "come on, lets get on the bus, ok time for lunch, yum yum yum yum (pretending to eat), ok lunch is over, lets put our thermoses away, ok time for lunch again, yum yum yum yum, ok lunch is over, time to put everything away" and this gets repeated 4 or 5 times during several "school" sessions every day on. He's in for a surprise when he realizes you do more than get there, eat and go home.

Mallory is just doing amazing these days. Things have really come together for her this summer. And its almost like she realizes it too. Shes just so happy to "get it" and know what other kids are doing and being able to respond and play right there with them. She gets very excited about the littlest things-someone mentions popcorn and she RUNS to get the big popcorn containers that we have, she hears the word popsicle and she starts saying "I want a red one, no I want blue, Max you want blue??" She hears the sprinklers are going on and she runs in to get her bathing suit, she sees other kids pushing a doll in a stroller and she has to go get hers, she sees that its raining and shes so excited to ask for her raincoat. She sees that Max has a buckle on his backpack that hooks in the front and she says "Mommy I want a buckle, buckle me Pleeeeaaaaseee". Like its the coolest thing she has ever seen and then I have to do some kind of make-shift tying of her backpack straps so that it looks like Max's cool buckle. She is also playing so cutely with dolls and doing some really good pretending. She has been really into trying all of my food lately including sushi and soy sauce (she got my tastebuds and will try anything while Max alternates between a bagel and cream cheese and peanut butter and jelly for every single meal like guess who). The other day she was putting a baby in a high chair in a doll house and I hear her saying "you want soy sauce?? Ok, here you go". So cute.

This is all very recent for her and its so great to see. Especially the way she interacts with Max. I never thought I'd see some of the things that are happening between the two of them. Of course there is fighting and not sharing and hitting and crying and pushing and all of that. But there is also playing together and dancing and holding hands that is unsolicited by me! And laughing and sneaking into eachother's rooms after bedtime when I go downstairs just to make say goodnight one more time or make sure the other is still awake. The other day Max came downstairs after Mallory went to bed and said "Mommy can I tell you a secret? I just kissed Mallory's hand while she was in bed and said I love you". They are so lucky. And we are too!

Mallory's language skills are developing so quickly now but there are still things that are hard for her. One thing that is difficult is her use of pronouns. This is all pretty normal and I know it will eventually go away and I'll wish she still did it because it is pretty cute. She is using alot of pronouns now but she gets them confused. So if she needs help with something, she'll say "I want help you me" or if she wants to sit on me she'll say "Mommy I want sit on my lap". Or if she wants something sometimes she'll say "Give it to her!!" instead of "give it to me". And she also still uses third person to refer to her self like "thats Mallory's" or "Its Mallory's turn!" but Elmo does that too and he is 3 as well :)

The other day she had her sunglasses and back pack on and she started saying "Time to go on the bus, we're going aptapella! Lets go aptapella". I had her say it a few times before I realized she was saying "Beth Tfiloh"! Max's camp.

Max is at such an inquisitive age. I can just see his brain soaking up information and wanting more and more. The questions he asks me, sometimes I don't even know how to answer them. One day he said something like "when is the last year?" And I was like um "last year was 2011". And he said "No when will be the last year ever?" Um...I don't know. And he wants to know things like "Mommy how did you know my name when I was born" and "Will Mallory ever be older than me?" and "What letter does 5 start with?" and "will there be big kids in my kindergarten class?". Those I can answer but he does stump me sometimes. But then he'll still say things that are so typical 5 year old like "Mommy can we buy this handitizer?" (hand sanitizer) and "I think I'll bring this to school for hotel" (show and tell) and when he told me that "he wasn't allowed to smile at camp because his counselors told him there is no smiling at Beth Tfiloh" and I had to explain about sarcasm

Trying to enjoy these next few days before its back to work for this mommy! Good night  and happy end of summer!
